Barbara Hamilton Gibson Watercolors
Barb is a native New Englander, born in Concord, New Hampshire and brought up in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She spent most of her adult life in Connecticut and now lives in Chatham on Cape Cod.
Her lifelong interest in art was encouraged by both parents and inspired by her cousin, Mary Jane Holmes Baillie a prominent artist in Toronto, Canada. In Middle School in Duxbury, MA she took art lessons from Frank Rogers who taught art at the Winsor School in Boston for many years. Her High School art teacher, Hamish McEwen, mentored her and his encouragement remains important in her artistic development.
During her working life, her creativity was channeled into work and planning for the Farmington, CT Public Library. Her good friend, Constance Patterson, a Connecticut Painter who had exhibited several times at the Farmington Library, encouraged her; once Barb retired in 2006, painting became her lifelong priority.
Barbara has studied with several prominent Cape Artists including Kelly Knowles, Robert Mesrop, Karen North Wells, Suzanne Packer and Vera Champlin. She has also participated in workshops with Mary Whyte, Don Demers, and Frank Eber. Barb continues to learn and learn.
Barb’s paintings have won awards (see awards page) and have been exhibited during the summer at Cape Abilities’ Farm to Table Gallery, 193 Main St., Chatham. She was honored to have the opportunity to share her passion and exhibit her work in the William Hoppin Gallery at the Barney Library, Farmington, CT, where she started her public library career in 1970. Barb is currently a member of the Guild of Chatham Painters and exhibits in the Guild's outside gallery on Chatham's Methodist Church lawn on Fridays July through Labor Day. Inspiration for Barbara’s paintings comes from the New England landscape, the changing seasons, and fantastic light. Cape Cod’s wonderful variety of subjects makes it the perfect place to live and paint.
